Out and about in Rutland
Rutland is the smallest historic English county, bounded on the West and North by Leicestershire, North East by Lincolnshire and South East by Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. It's greatest length is only 18 miles, with greatest breadth being 17 miles, it is the smallest county in terms of population.
The only towns in Rutland are Uppingham and Oakham the county town, at the center of the county is Rutland Water with a similar surface area to windemere in the lakedistrict . It is an important nature reserve serving as an overwintering site for wildfowl and a breeding site for ospreys. The is also a bike track around the water and bike hire center along with a sailing club and cafes.
The market town of Stamford is just over the border with it's historic buildings and famous public school, the are many historic houses and museums in Stamford the best of them being Burghley house with it's famous horse trials event each year.
